IKEA goes SocialMedia

Today this showed up in my Facebook news feed:

Not a surprise that IKEA uses this channel, especially with the strong uptake of Facebook in Sweden.

SocialAd or not?

Is this a part of the SocialAds feature from Facebook? I don't think so. I can not find a Facebook Page for IKEA. So is this a SocialAd or another type of ad that is shown in the news feed?

I am not sure if I like this.

Ads are fine to me, but not when they clutter up the news feed. Keep them as banners around the screen. If I had a friend who is an IKEA fan, and this was part of a SocialAd, clearly indicating who was the fan of IKEA it might work, but I am not sure...

What is your view? Ads in the news feed - good or bad?

My belief is that Fb's Social Ads be unsuccessful, just like ads in webmail and other types of ads in communications tools the user focuses on the communications features and will quickly develop a blind spot for the ads.

BW wrote a interesting article about the issue last week, the closing paragraph with Google's Brin a insightful wrap up.

But the Facebook Beacon (although it stinks from a privacy standpoint) and the Brand info pages could become really interessting.

IMO the huge advantage of Social Networks like Fb will become apparent when brands realize that the best marketing they can have is to publicly show that they do active customer retention!

I'll blog some more about the Fb Marketing initiative next week in our blog (in swedish) at blogg.earlyoctober.se.

Have a great weekend! :D

Hi Daniel,

thanks for the comment, I'll look for your post on your blog!

Somehow I do not think that the IKEA ad is a "true" Social Ad, as it doesn't have the "friend association" I had expected.

I have not looked into the details of the Beacon functionality yet, but you have probably seen the reactions so far. Eg on Lidne's blog: http://businessbydesign.lidne.com/index.php/businessdesign/blog/links_for_2007_11_09/
